Zelda Zinn: Obsolete Series
“Time can be conceived of as a gradual building up of layers between us and the past. Lacking first hand knowledge of the subjects, we make assumptions about the people staring out at us in their Sunday best. We recognize the vocabulary of the 19th century, yet cannot penetrate it. I have overlaid these found portraits with a patina of age and a concocted fate or hint thereof. The gulf between us and them is made visual in the partial obscuring of the sitters.”
