Over the last several years Denver painter Don Quade’s work has been changing. When he first started to show his pieces some years ago, the influences of Latino folk art predominated, but there was also more than a little dash of the minimalism originally conjured up by his friend and fellow Denver artist, Emilio Lobato.

Bye-bye, Biennial, but many exhibits are showing through August
The Biennial of the Americas has officially ended, but many of the associated exhibits are still running, in part because the Biennial was originally supposed to continue through August.
Gabe Scott, Visual Art Soirce (visualartsource.com), Aug. 27
The end of summer in Denver also marks the conclusion of the satellite exhibits revolving around the primary exhibition of the Biennial of the Americas,
which ended along with the month of July. One of the finest offerings is a series of installations, under the title "Perceptions," ...

Shows around town display a range of expressions
Contemporary art is characterized by stylistic diversity, with a wide variety of different approaches vying for attention — each with its own roster of adherents. This week, I'm looking at conceptualism, realism and abstraction, all of which have long traditions and yet are completely contemporary in feel.

Last call to see Amy Metier, Bruce Price and Eric Michael Corrigan shows
The trajectory of the exhibition season has two principal arcs. The first gets going in the fall and peters out at the first of the year, while the second begins in late winter and early spring before hitting autopilot for the summer. It's just like school. And that means we're hitting midterms as the initial wave of late-winter shows gets ready to close. This week, I'll point out a handful of them, all of which come down on Saturday.

Enholm Molly, Focus on Denver, Art Ltd. (Los Angeles, CA), Nov./Dec.
Walker Fine Art, located in the Golden Triangle Museum District, exhitis contemporary art with an emphasis on sculpture,
mixed media, and experimental photography from regional, national and international mid-career artists.
Austrian-born artist Sabin Aell moved to Denver in 2005, working with recyled found materials to continue an
exploration of materials, attidues, and associations.
In her first solo show at Walker Fine Art, Aell directs her attention towards photography in a multi-step process...
Goebel Hasse Leane, Moonwalk, visualartsource.com (ArtScene and art ltd. online), Dec. 11
For Sabin Aell everything that exists is based on a formula, an undifined code she used to create her mohter and
father series of images for 'Moonwalk'. Based on a pair of echoing forms, these etheral works are not twins, but opposites.

Opposites Attract
Austrian-born photographer Sabin Aell settled in Denver, which she calls “the Wild West,” just a few years ago. But she began making art long before that as a child in the town of Linz. In the ’90s, Aell documented the alternative music scene in Europe — think Rob Zombie in Vienna — but now her subjects are very different.
In her first major Mile High exhibit, Moonwalk / mother & father, at Walker Fine Art, Aell shows altered photographs of flowers.
In them, she’s reconciling opposites: The light-shaded images are meant to stand in for Mom, while the dark ones with which
they are paired symbolize Dad. (Calling Dr. Freud.) Aell’s production method is wholly compatible with this, as it shares the idea
of balancing the disparate.
